The numbers and letters on your tyre sidewall contain everything you need to know about your tyre. Learn to decode them in just 5 minutes.

Every tyre carries a series of numbers and letters on its sidewall that tell you everything about its size, load capacity, and speed rating. Understanding these markings helps you buy the right replacement tyre.

Reading a Tyre Code: Example 205/55 R16 91V

  • 205 — Tyre width in millimetres
  • 55 — Aspect ratio (sidewall height as a percentage of width)
  • R — Radial construction (the most common type)
  • 16 — Rim diameter in inches
  • 91 — Load index (91 = 615kg maximum load per tyre)
  • V — Speed rating (V = up to 149mph)

Common Speed Ratings

| Rating | Max Speed | |--------|-----------| | T | 118mph | | H | 130mph | | V | 149mph | | W | 168mph | | Y | 186mph |

Load Index Guide

The load index ranges from 70 (335kg) to 120 (1,400kg). Always replace with a tyre matching or exceeding your original load index.

Additional Markings

  • M+S or M&S — Mud and Snow rated
  • XL or Reinforced — Extra load capacity
  • Run Flat — Can be driven flat for limited distance
  • E mark — European approval mark

When ordering replacement tyres, always provide the full tyre code to ensure an exact match. Eddie's Mobile Tyres can advise on correct tyre specifications for your vehicle.
