Tyre Rotation: What It Is and How Often You Should Do It

Rotating your tyres evenly distributes wear across all four tyres, extending their lifespan and saving you money. Here's everything you need to know about tyre rotation.

Tyre rotation involves moving each tyre to a different position on the vehicle — typically swapping front to rear — to ensure all tyres wear at the same rate.

Why Tyre Rotation is Important

Front and rear tyres experience different forces. Front tyres on front-wheel-drive cars do the steering and most of the braking, so they wear faster. Rotating tyres evens out this wear, meaning you replace all four tyres at once rather than replacing tyres prematurely.

How Often Should You Rotate Tyres?

Most manufacturers recommend tyre rotation every 5,000–8,000 miles, or approximately every 6 months for average UK drivers.

Rotation Patterns

  • Forward cross — Front tyres go straight to the rear; rear tyres cross to the front (best for FWD vehicles)
  • Rearward cross — Rear tyres go straight to the front; front tyres cross to the rear (best for RWD vehicles)
  • X-pattern — All four tyres cross diagonally (good for all-wheel-drive vehicles)
