UK roads are full of potholes, and they're the number one cause of sudden tyre damage. Learn how to identify pothole damage and when you can claim compensation.

The UK has a well-documented pothole problem. According to the AA, a pothole is reported every 22 seconds in the UK. For motorists, potholes are the leading cause of sudden tyre damage, wheel damage, and suspension problems.

Types of Pothole Tyre Damage

  1. 1Sidewall bulge or bubble — The most common result of a significant pothole impact. The internal structure of the tyre ruptures, causing an outward bulge. This requires immediate tyre replacement.
  1. 1Sidewall cut — The sharp edge of a pothole can cut through the outer rubber of the sidewall, exposing the tyre cords beneath.
  1. 1Tread separation — Severe impact can separate the tread layer from the underlying belt structure.
  1. 1Flat tyre — Direct perforation of the tyre by the pothole edge.
  1. 1Wheel (rim) damage — Buckled alloy or steel wheels are common alongside tyre damage in serious pothole impacts.

What To Do After Hitting a Pothole

  1. 1Pull over safely when it's safe to do so
  2. 2Visually inspect all four tyres for bulges, cuts, or rapid deflation
  3. 3Check tyre pressures
  4. 4If you find damage, do not continue driving — call Eddie's Mobile Tyres

Can You Claim Compensation for Pothole Damage?

Yes. In England and Wales, you can claim compensation from your local council if the pothole was reported and not repaired within a reasonable time. You'll need: - Photos of the pothole (with measurements if possible) - Repair invoices for tyre and wheel damage - Evidence the pothole was previously reported

Eddie's Mobile Tyres can provide a detailed damage report to support your compensation claim.
