Winter is the harshest season for your tyres. Cold temperatures, ice, and flooding all take their toll. Follow these 8 tips to stay safe this winter.
Winter presents the most challenging conditions for tyres. Cold temperatures harden the rubber compound, reducing grip, while wet and icy roads demand the most from your tyres' tread.
1. Check Tyre Pressure Weekly Pressure drops approximately 1 PSI for every 10°C temperature fall. Check pressures every week during winter.
2. Inspect Tread Depth Before Winter Sets In If your tread depth is below 3mm heading into winter, replace your tyres before cold weather arrives.
3. Consider All-Season or Winter Tyres For drivers in northern England, Scotland, and Wales, all-season or winter tyres provide significantly better performance in cold temperatures.
4. Avoid Potholes Winter roads are pothole-heavy. Pothole impacts can damage tyre sidewalls, cause internal breaks, and throw wheels out of alignment.
5. Check for Visible Damage Regularly Cold weather can cause cracks in tyre sidewalls (perishing). Inspect your tyres visually at least once a fortnight.
6. Don't Spin Your Wheels on Ice If stuck in ice, apply gentle acceleration. Spinning wheels generates heat, melts the ice slightly, and then refreezes — making the situation worse.
7. Keep TPMS Sensors Functioning TPMS sensors are even more important in winter. Ensure they are calibrated and working correctly.
8. Have Emergency Cover Arranged Always have an emergency tyre fitting service on hand. Eddie's Mobile Tyres covers the whole of the UK for emergency winter tyre callouts.

Not every puncture means you need a new tyre. Find out when a puncture can be safely repaired and when you should replace the tyre entirely.
Budget tyres can save you money upfront, but premium tyres outperform them in safety tests. We'll break down the real cost difference and help you decide.
